The Anti-Ad

How do you create an advertising campaign for a generation that can’t stand advertising?

    You make an anti-ad.

No logos. No branding. We don’t even use the word “Doritos.” Crazy right? Truth is: Doritos is such an iconic brand, we don’t need to name it for you to crave it. So we ditched the product plugs and crafted Frito-Lay’s first ever “brandless” commercial directed by music video maestro Dave Meyers. Then we deleted logos from our social media channels, outdoor ads, website, and even pulled off a live MTV Video Music Awards integration—all without ever using the name or showing a bag. Special thanks to our amazing clients at [DELETED].

This year, Doritos® introduced new Flamin’ Hot Limón. The bold heat of Flamin’ Hot, now with a twist. To announce the news, we transformed world famous recording artist Post Malone into his new alter ego – Post Limon – the ultimate brand spokesperson for the new flavor.

The spot, directed by Terence Neale, launches during the Grammy Awards and features Post’s chart-topping track “Wow” off his latest album Hollywood is Bleeding. We tapped real characters from Post’s entourage to star alongside him, including his longtime tattoo artist Kyle Hediger, who may or may not add some new triangular artwork to Post’s face. For the launch, Post Malone even changed his name to Post Limon across his social accounts. Without further ado, Doritos Flamin’ Hot Limon presents: #PostLimon.

Because of COVID-19, creators across America are stuck at home. So, in order to offer a stage and the chance to get some much needed cash, GS&P and Doritos decided to bring back the wildly successful crowdsourcing platform Crash The Super Bowl. Only this time we’re asking people to #CrashFromHome. Anyone can make a video. Any way they want. Dance, crunch, craft, create. Then upload to crashfromhome.com. The 15 best entries will get cash prizes and will air in a compilation during one of the most hotly anticipated events in recent memory — NFL Kickoff Weekend.

After fans begged for it, Frito-Lay brought back the cult classic Doritos 3D—a snack that adds a new dimension to the iconic triangular chip. We decided to bring this extra dimension to life with a Super Bowl spot starring Matthew McConaughey, who plays what might just be the weirdest role of his career—that of a 2D man living in a 3D world. Meet Flat Matthew.

Directed by Academy Award winner Damien Chazelle, the spot imagines a world where McConaughey wakes up to find that he’s a paper-thin version of himself. This newfound flatness adds challenges to every part of the star’s day, whether he’s walking his dog or meeting celebrities such as Jimmy Kimmel and Mindy Kaling on live TV. The only way out of this 2D conundrum? Doritos 3D, of course. We also allowed the entire world to experience life in 2D by creating the first-ever TikTok filter that turns people flat. On Snapchat fans were able to use AR to become part of the spot and even buy the product straight from a virtual vending machine.

    Released: February 2021
