Being Black is Not a Crime

  • Being black is not a crime. White silence is.

What happened in Minneapolis last week was horrifying. What has happened to the black community for 400-plus years is much of the same — and they’ve experienced it alone for far too long.

Now is not the time to sit on the sidelines. It’s time to use our collective voices, and stand with the black community. It’s time to hold ourselves accountable. It’s time to stand with George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Eric Garner, all victims of police brutality, and the entire black community.

It’s now on us to act. It’s on us to stand up against systemic racism in every way imaginable.

February is Black History Month. But 28 days isn't enough time to celebrate the rich history of Black Americans. So in partnership with the Golden State Warriors we created Beyond28. An integrated campaign that encourages people to celebrate black history all year round.

The campaign includes films starring 2-time MVP, Steph Curry, and other iconic Bay Area images. We created full-page newspaper ad that turns black history month into an all-year affair. And a variety of work that ran, and will run, across a variety of social channels and in-arena.

It culminates with an online interview series, profiling important people making an impact within the black community today. One video will be released on the 29th each month.

After fans begged for it, Frito-Lay brought back the cult classic Doritos 3D—a snack that adds a new dimension to the iconic triangular chip. We decided to bring this extra dimension to life with a Super Bowl spot starring Matthew McConaughey, who plays what might just be the weirdest role of his career—that of a 2D man living in a 3D world. Meet Flat Matthew.

Directed by Academy Award winner Damien Chazelle, the spot imagines a world where McConaughey wakes up to find that he’s a paper-thin version of himself. This newfound flatness adds challenges to every part of the star’s day, whether he’s walking his dog or meeting celebrities such as Jimmy Kimmel and Mindy Kaling on live TV. The only way out of this 2D conundrum? Doritos 3D, of course. We also allowed the entire world to experience life in 2D by creating the first-ever TikTok filter that turns people flat. On Snapchat fans were able to use AR to become part of the spot and even buy the product straight from a virtual vending machine.
